The Hai Museum of Art Shanghai is presenting ‘German Art Today: Contemporary Art from Germany’. The exhibition features over 160 works by German artists, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and installations, and offers a comprehensive insight into the diversity and artistic achievements of the contemporary German art scene.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the town twinning between Shanghai and Hamburg. It is also a significant year for deepening the comprehensive partnership between China and Germany, as well as for people-to-people exchanges. Against this backdrop, the exhibition is not only an artistic showcase but also a significant cultural initiative that celebrates the friendship between the two cities and promotes broader Sino-German cultural exchange.
German contemporary art occupies a unique and influential position in the history of world art. This exhibition brings together 23 influential contemporary German artists who represent key movements such as Neo-Expressionism, abstraction and conceptual photography.
The works on display are characterised by bold experimentation with form and visual language, and reconcile artistic autonomy with a keen awareness of social reality. Visitors can explore Dirk Salz’s abstract spaces, constructed from paint and resin on multi-layered panels, as well as Herbert Mehler’s delicate steel sculptures, characterised by precision and poetic restraint, and Nikola Dimitrov’s rhythmic colour compositions on canvas.
